What will americans do when the world runs out of petroleum? It may be alot sooner than later?
Well, it seems to me that only americans buy the most gas guzzlers, everyone else in the world, have better sensibilities. Unless you’re a government in need of practical utility vehicles.
The limo industry could easily convert to an alternative fuel source, but heavy industry will have difficulties, there are a lot more over-sized trucks doing genuine work than a lot of people may realize.
The recreational driver will be the most put out, since you only get about 10 miles to the gallon on most typical big pick-ups, before aftermarket tampering.
Although, there will always be motorcyles, they can run off of almost anything.
I seem to recall, a role playing game called Car Wars, where all the vehicles ran on Electricity. Will it ever get that bad, especially if the American Grain Industry gets hit with a Blight of some kind. I’ve noticed that Americans are very squeamish about genetically improved products, especially food stuffs. If the source of Ethanol is struck with a Blight. What will you do then?

what a thoughtful question!! I never realized that America owns and operates more vehicles than any other country because the people CAN AFFORD IT!!! I don’t think the US will be the only country affected, as your question suggests. I do think the US will be ok, however, since it is leading the automotive industry in alternative fuel vehicles, lol. What country would you like your first alternative fuel vehicle shipped to? Lemme know, we already have a few models to choose from……..I’ll hook you right up with one.

By that time an alternative fuel source would be find, I believe, it will be ethanol or CNG…Dont you worry please, Americans will survive and that too most graciously!

The world doesn’t have a short supply of petroleum. It only has a short supply of ‘easy’ petroleum.
Over time, crude oil will be more and more difficult to get out of the ground, and require more refining to be usuable. So stuff will be more expensive.
But that’s Ok, because that will make solar cars, hydrogen powered cars, ethanol powered cars, etc., a better deal. Right now, they are too expensive, and nobody wants them.
But the higher price of oil will be the best thing for those more environmentally freindly alternatives.

I think that the country that got an airplane off the ground and founded the internet will come up with new solutions, and the rest of the world will say it’s crap (regardless of how good or bad it is)

Actually it won’t happen in my lifetime. The world’s largest source of petroleum hasn’t had more than a few million barrows removed from it yet. The largest source is Oil Shales. These haven’t yet been tapped because all traditional methods of recovering oil from oil shales would drive the price of gasoline above three dollars.
I hope that before we come to rely on oil shales for our oil, we come up with a less damaging resource to draw on. Oil Shales are generally strip mined or they heat them up in the ground and try to pump up as much as possible before the oil seeps into the ground water. Neither one is environmentally friendly.
